What is Light Therapy?

Light Therapy is a natural, non-drug therapy which involves sitting in front of a specially designed light box. Light is important to mental well being. Light therapy, in one form or another, has been used as a treatment for a number of conditions since ancient times. Nearly 2000 years ago, Greco-Roman physicians were treating depression and lethargy with sunlight directed toward the eyes. More recently, light therapy has been researched and documented in 1890, 1946 and lots of studies since 1999.

While some people look forward to the brisk days of winter with cozy nights by the fire, others dread the cooler temperatures and shorter days. As history repeats itself, the winter season will bring, like clockwork, worsening symptoms of depression. Up to 3% or about 9 million people in the U.S. suffer from winter depression, which expert’s term Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD. Some of the 6.7% Americans who suffer depression year-round find that their symptoms get worse in winter while countless others have a less severe form dubbed the ‘Winter Blues’.

As the days grow shorter, people find their moods grow darker. Emotional symptoms of depression and SAD include: Feeling sad, empty, hopeless or numb, Having a loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, irritability or anxiety, trouble making decisions, feeling guilty or worthlessness, thoughts of death and suicide. Physical symptoms include: Headaches, back pain, muscle aches and joint pain, chest pain, digestive problems, exhaustion and fatigue, sleeping problems, change in appetite or weight, dizziness or lightheadedness. Experts believe that SAD stems from a body clock that’s out of synch and is associated with the lack of natural sunlight. The most common hypothesis is: although the body has natural daily rhythms, they are not fully precise and rely on the intensity of sunlight to provide adjusting cues. These cues originate in the retina at the back of the eye creating signals which pass through the optic nerve to the mid brain, setting in motion a number of chemical changes including an increase in the neurotransmitter serotonin which is necessary for a sense of well being, and regulation and suppression of the hormone melatonin, which is a factor in normal sleep patterns and may influence sleeps recuperative benefits. Many doctors suggest planning ahead by increasing medications during the long winter months, but they also have discovered that Light Therapy is a very effective treatment. Bright light therapy can relieve depression possibly as well as antidepressants would.

Depression during pregnancy is a difficult problem since women are discouraged from taking antidepressants. Yet untreated depression during pregnancy can compromise her unborn baby’s health. These same mothers are at very high risk of postpartum depression which further puts her child at risk for brain development problems, depression and substance abuse. And while most antidepressants do not cause major birth defects, they may adversely affect the newborns’ growth and development. Bright light therapy has shown promise as an effective treatment for depression and is safe throughout a woman’s pregnancy.
